The Tupelo Community Theatre was founded in 1969 out of visionary citizens’ dreams for creating a local theatre group. Over 200,000 patrons have enjoyed more than 250 productions since TCT’s first production of Laura. In 1976, TCT purchased a church building and turned it into a theatre where it first production was The Best Man. TCT plunged ahead in 1984 and purchased the historic Lyric Theatre, which opened with the production of On Golden Pond. Many of TCT’s productions have been recognized and awarded over 65 times in the past 20 years. Included among their awards are “Best Production” at the Mississippi Theatre Association Festival six times and production winners at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in 2004 and 2014. In November 2013, TCT opened a second space, TCT Off Broadway. It’s an 80 seat cabaret theatre space, which has offered additional opportunities for actors, directors, and patrons. In 2014, TCT received the National AACT Organizational Achievement Award. Many changes have developed over the 45 years since that first production, but TCT’s purpose has never wavered – to develop, promote, teach, and stimulate interest in the dramatic arts.
